Gillmor Hangs Merc News Hat

After 10 years at the San Jose Mercury News, one of tech journalism's most influential, Dan Gillmor, is calling it quits.

I'll be leaving the San Jose Mercury News next month to work on a citizen-journalism project.

I hope to pull together something useful that helps enable -- and demonstrates -- the emerging grassroots journalism that I wrote about in my recent book. Something powerful is happening, it's in the early stages and I have a chance to help figure this out.

I hate the idea of leaving. But I'd hate not trying this even more.

Obviously, there will be much more to say in the days and weeks ahead...

I'm sure there will be Dan and we'll all eagerly await word of your plans. Something powerful is happening, and this move further validates the significance of this new medium. While Dan hangs one journalistic hat, he'll be donning another--one that we're still trying to get our arms around as far as tapping into its full potential. These are exciting times--ones to not only watch, but to engage in and become active participants in this ever expanding knowledge sharing movement.
